The Average Joe
My name is Joe Seagraves. I recently switched my major from
Business to Aviation Management. Before I decided to switch my major I had
no clue about what it was I wanted to do with my life or what I wanted to
become. Since switching majors I have felt an overwhelming sense of purpose and
direction, this is a feeling I have never experienced before. This major will
allow me many different opportunities for careers once I graduate. On a more
personal note I am passionate about sports. My three favorite sports are
basketball, tennis, and golf. I grew up playing basketball and it was my first
love. However, due to a lack of athleticism I could only achieve so much in
this game. To help relieve the stresses brought on by basketball and just to
challenge myself as a person I began playing tennis. I did a little better in
this because it tends to require less sheer athleticism and a little more
mental play. After I retired, as I like to say, from basketball I took up the
game of golf. Golf is currently the sport I am most passionate about. This
passion comes from the simple fact that I am not good and that bothers me.
Every time I hit a bad shot it frustrates me to the core. Golf is helping to
challenge me on a mental level by teaching me to control my emotions through
the rough rounds and it is also challenging me on a physical level by making me
learn a new sport. In the future I think I will stick with the “Country Club”
sports like golf and tennis because they seem to be a little easier on my body.
In the future I hope to have a steady job, children of my own, and time for a
round of golf every week or so.

I'm glad to see I have another fellow golfer in my group! As I said in my introduction, I play golf here at OU so I can definitely relate to you with it frustrating you all the way down to the core. No matter how good you are, it is still very frustrating! I can relate to you with the future goals of having a steady job and playing country club sports weekly.
ReplyDeleteWell it looks like I’m the only none golfer in the group so maybe that means I should work on my game a little bit. I actually had a very similar experience when it came to playing basketball as I enjoyed it but my coaches thought I was better suited to keep the bench warm. I really like the attitude you have about your golf game and I find it very motivational.
ReplyDeleteAha, Joe: GOLF.... yes! I will see if I can lure you into trying a storytelling style or even a project that seems to me like it would be so much fun: designing a miniature golf course based on the Indian Epics. I know miniature golf is not really golf... but it sure is fun for storytelling! Anyway, think about it... I tried last year and got no takers, but maybe you will be the minature golf pioneer! Miniature Golf as Story
ReplyDeleteAbout links: in your next blog post, try making a clickable link with link text instead of the http code. Here's a step by step for making clickable link text: Blogger Links ... and if you have questions about how that works, let me know! Once you start thinking in terms of clickable links, it will become second nature, just like bold or italics. :-)
I'm glad you did not get scared, and switch you major back to what it was. I hope you find your way through, and find a job you love in the Aviation field. You seem like a person who loves challenges. I really like that, because I also like going after things that are difficult for me to perform it. I also enjoy watching and playing sports, but I prefer soccer over basketball. I tried golf once, and it was really hard to even just hit the ball. Although I sucked at it, I kept trying and hit the ball.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't have much personal experience in any of your Big Three sports, I can definitely identify with your love for the mental aspect of a sport. As a runner all throughout high school, I was always learning to improve in both consistent, day-in, day-out training as well as the HUGE mental game which could cut 30 seconds off your 5K in no time. I've always admired golfers, though; instead of just being able to take advantage of emotions and passion, you have to control them and keep cool! Not sure that's my game.
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome to hear how changing your major put you on the right path so profoundly, with everything just falling into place! It sounds like you won't have to worry or wonder about your future as much any more, which is a great place to be. I hope things take off well with Aviation Management!
Hey Joe! I am glad that you found something that you enjoy more and switched to it. Sometimes people just stick to their major instead of finding something that they enjoy more because they do not know what it is that they are looking for yet. Golf seems to be a popular sport around here haha, I do play mini golf with my friends once in a blue moon but that is the closest I've ever gotten to it.
ReplyDeleteHey Joe! It’s nice to meet you! I think you being an Aviation major it really cool! That is a huge change from being a Business major, but I’m happy you found some since of direction with what you are doing! I also love playing golf and by the way your profile picture looks I didn’t even need to read your introduction to know you love playing golf. Look forward to reading more from you Jake!
ReplyDeleteAviation management sounds like a really interesting subject! I'm sure it's quite complex. I must be in the minority in that I haven't changed my major. I was lucky enough to pick one that I was pretty good at. I'm sure the sports you like all offer quite different benefits. One sport can require speed over everything else. Another requires more concentration.
ReplyDeleteIt’s so great that you were able to switch to a major that made you feel hopeful about your future. It is truly an amazing feeling when we get a sense of direction. I really enjoyed reading about how golf has not only been a sport to you, but also a lesson for you as well. Judging from the passion with which you write about golf, I have no doubt that you will go far with the sport. Good luck with everything!
ReplyDeleteHi Joe! I completely understand switching majors and finally finding your passion -- I also switched away from International Business to International Area Studies! Business was definitely not making me like my life, but now that I'm in a more diverse field, it's so much better for me! Your goals of a family and a round or two of golf every week sound very realistic and manageable. Nice introduction! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that the major switch gave you a sense of purpose; I think that's one of those things that is a lot harder to come by than people think and I had a similar experience where I felt pretty lost until I switched to Letters. It's cool that you've played so many different sports! I'm not much of a sports person at all. In fact, my coordination is terrible, so rather than sports I prefer outdoor activities like hiking instead. Golf is quite an interesting sport, though, and I hope you get to continue with it!

ReplyDeleteHey, Joe!
ReplyDeleteI'm actually in the other class (mythology/ folklore) but I wanted to check out this class and see what y'all have been working on! Aviation Management seems SO cool- though I don't know much about it. I love that you're so passionate about golf! I actually work at the OU Jimmie Austin Golf Course, so I'm surrounded by golfers all the time! Can't wait to read your stories- I'm sure they'll be about sports (-:

Hi Joe! I really like to play tennis but it definitely a little frustrating when you can't hit the ball over the net. Right now it is just a sport of me running after the ball. I'm hoping with a little more practice I can't get the hang of it. I haven't hit a golf ball a day in my life but ironic enough I am writing instructions on how to perfect a golf swing for another class.... We'll se how that turns out,
ReplyDeleteUntil next time!

Hi joe! First off clever name for the post! I enjoyed getting to know you, even though it is the last week. That is awesome that you were able to find what you love and are passionate about. I hope you get to find the job of your dreams in the future and that you always have that sense of purpose. I have never played golf but have heard lots of wonderful things about it. My mom has recently gotten into it and loves doing it! Good luck with the rest of your college career!
