Story: The Man Named Stan

The Man Named Stan

There once was a man named Stan. He use to live in a van until, one day he heard of this incredible challenge. The challenge was issued by King Charles of England. The challenge was to all the men of England to win the honor to marry the king’s daughter, Princess Liz, and inherit the throne from King Charles. This was a very interesting proposition to the people because inheriting the throne meant that their families would become the heirs to the throne and be forever wealthy. The king issued this challenge because he was getting old and never was able to have a son that could inherit the throne. This contest would be judged by the king to find who he thought the most suitable bachelor was for his daughter. In order to decide this the king arranged for many contests to take place. The contests were fencing, archery, pop culture, history, and a political debate. The message of this contest spread throughout the land and stirred up curiosity and ill fated hope in many men. Stan was one of the men that heard of this and he believed that he could win. The next day Stan packed up his van and drove to the palace. Once he got to the palace Stan somehow passed the preliminary checks and was told that he was one of the one hundred men who would get the honor of competing to marry Princess Liz. When Stan got the news he was elated. When the day for the first contest, fencing, came Stan blew everyone away and was placed first out of the remaining men after the king sent 20 prospects home. The second contest was archery which Stan excelled at. Stan won this contest and 30 more men were sent home because they could not even string their bows. The third day was the history test. This test was especially hard because knowing history is pretty important for the job of a king. Due to the fact that it was so hard only ten men passed and of course Stan was the highest scorer. The fourth day was a game show style test of the men’s knowledge of pop culture because everyone wants a leader that understands his people. This stage of the contest left only three men for the final stage, the political debate. King Charles decided to have his parliament attend this portion of the challenge to help him decide which bachelor would be the best king. The three contestants came onto the stage in their sharpest suits and were prosed hot button questions from King Charles. Each contestant was asked the same group of questions and after the question period the contestants debate their political ideas. At the end of this debate King Charles called a meeting with parliament and asked them who they thought would be the best heir to his throne. The winner of this vote and the king’s favorite man was Stan. Stan won the honor of marrying Princess Liz and together they lived happily ever after.
Rama and Lakshamana
This story was based off the story "Rama Wins Sita" where Rama must bend the bow in order to win the right to marry the kings daughter.

Reading Notes: Ramayana Online

Rama and Bharata
Two brothers meet to weep for their dead father. Bharata had the power of the government and he gave that to Rama in front of the army. Rama intends to use these new found powers to finish the will left by his da father. However, Jaball suggested that the dead no longer need their will to be done and that they essentially do not need offerings because they are dead therefor they cannot eat. Rama is angered by this and tells Jaball that he is incorrect in his thinking and that he will continue to fulfil his late fathers’ wishes. Rama argues that Jaballs’ argument is one that has not yet been proven therefor he doesn’t believe it, much like the sciences.

The Golden Deer

There was a good looking deer in the woods that Sita wanted it so Rama after it with his bow. Lakshmana then told Sita that she heard that the devil people disguise themselves as deer in order to lure men into the forest. I got quite lost after this point.

Growth Mindset

Growth Mindset
I have never hear of Carol Dweck but her concept of a growth mindset makes a lot of sense to me. In my school work I often find that I am a part of that fixed mindset. A lot of the times this happens because I am not fully engaged in the material at hand. I find that if I fully commit to the class I don't fall into the fixed mindset as much. As a retired athlete however, I was very much in the growth mindset. I was always looking for new ways to push myself wether it was finding harder drills or just playing against older people. My goal for this semester is to continue growing as a student and maintain my eagerness to learn.

Starting the Semester

Starting the Semester
At the beginning of each semester I go the all my classes syllabi and write down all the assignment and test dates. I also write down dates I believe I should start the assignments that will take longer. I find this to be a helpful method in stopping procrastination. I also find it helpful to buy all my materials and books the week before class as to avoid that extra stress the first week of school.

Reading Options

I have chosen to read PDE Ramayana

I have taken a few college courses about Christianity but never any courses devoted to any other religion. I would say a have a fairly general knowledge regarding Hinduism and Buddhism. I have no real knowledge about Indian culture prior to this class but I am interested in learning.

Brothers in the Animal Kingdom

This introduction speaks about two brothers who argued often and their dad sat them down to tell them a story from his past. Their dad told them how they should “Stop fighting every second and appreciate each other”. I think this lesson can be applied to almost every family with kids. Siblings tend to fight and bicker with each other over extremely trivial things which is just human nature I would have to guess. I think that with age this goes away and siblings start to reach a time of peace with each other. Once this is achieved many situations become more pleasant and they often look back on past times with regret.

A Karmic Hero
The introduction to A Karmic Hero is very intriguing. From the first paragraph I was interested in the story and was very excited by the entire introduction. The storyline was a new concept to me and the introduction provided an insight to what the story would be about. The styling of the first page could be a little more interesting however, the author did a good job in the placement of the pictures. The picture came after the concept they were writing about which allowed the reader to picture this concept in their head before seeing the authors interpretation. I liked the interactive feature of the storybook as I read through it. I found that this helped to engage me as the reader.

Zoo Animal History

Zoo Animal History presents an entirely new topic to me in a very fun and creative way. I liked the idea of a “tour” for this story. The preview of the tour was a imaginative way to give the reader insight to what the following story would be about. The actual layout of the introduction is fairly plain but I think that helps the reader focus on the creative writing style.
